A championship changed the equation
LeBron James had pictured a future with the Knicks, including the possibility of ending his career at Madison Square Garden. New York’s championship run changed that plan. Speaking at the 76ers’ media day in Camden, James said the Knicks became an option he could no longer pursue after they beat San Antonio in June to end a 53-year title drought. He felt the backlash that would accompany joining the reigning champions made the move untenable. That decision did not diminish his regard for New York. James expressed admiration for the Knicks’ roster and Jalen Brunson, while emphasizing his enthusiasm for his new home in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia choice still brings Garden visits
James said his eventual free-agency decision came down to Philadelphia, Cleveland, Golden State, Miami and Minnesota. The Knicks were absent from that final group despite his earlier interest in playing there. His arrival with the Sixers puts him on a team that New York swept in the second round in May. The Knicks won those games by an average of 22.3 points. James is scheduled to return to the Garden on opening night, Oct. 20, and again on Feb. 27. A postseason meeting could bring further appearances against the team he once considered joining. New York will also remain part of his life away from basketball: James said he plans to divide his living time between the city and Philadelphia.
