Hendriks steps away
Liam Hendriks announced his retirement Tuesday, bringing an end to a career marked by All-Star success, a comeback from cancer and injuries that limited his final seasons. The Australian right-hander explained in a social media post that his arm and elbow could no longer handle the demands of pitching. He leaves the majors with a 33-36 record, a 3.88 ERA and 116 saves across 490 appearances.
From starter to All-Star closer
Hendriks began as a starting pitcher before finding his greatest success in relief. His major league career included time with the Twins, Blue Jays, Royals, Athletics, White Sox and Red Sox. He earned All-Star recognition with the Athletics in 2019, when he recorded 25 saves. He returned to the All-Star roster with the White Sox in 2021 and 2022, finishing those seasons with 38 and 37 saves, respectively.
A comeback beyond baseball
Diagnosed with Stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma in December 2022, Hendriks returned to pitch for Chicago the following May. He made five appearances that season, posting a 2-0 record with one save and a 5.40 ERA, and received AL Comeback Player of the Year honors. Tommy John surgery in August 2023 interrupted his career again. After signing a two-year deal with Boston ahead of the 2024 season, he did not pitch until the following season. He spent time with the Twins and Cubs on minor league contracts this year. Beyond his pitching achievements, Hendriks earned seven nominations for baseball’s annual award recognizing contributions both on and off the field.
