Contract Talks Reach Stalemate
Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta has stepped away from extension discussions with the front office. Selected in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Iowa, he is directing his attention to the 2026 season and has left negotiations in the hands of his agent. LaPorta acknowledged uncertainty about whether an agreement can be reached before he reaches free agency in 2027, though the franchise tag remains an option for the team.
Return From Injury Fuels Early Production
After surgery in November to repair a fully herniated disk that sidelined him for the final eight games of the 2025 season, LaPorta has quickly reestablished himself in the offense under new coordinator Drew Petzing. Through the first four games he has posted the third-most receiving yards with 228 and two touchdowns.
Strong Outing in Recent Defeat
The Lions fell to 2-2 following a 32-26 loss to the Carolina Panthers. In that contest LaPorta delivered what was viewed as his best performance of the season, finishing with eight receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown. Head coach Dan Campbell highlighted that his production speaks for itself and stressed the organization's high regard for the player, while noting that contract matters will be worked through without becoming a distraction. LaPorta has stated he seeks fair value rather than the highest salary at the position.
