Nebraska preparation takes priority
Mike Locksley is keeping his attention on Saturday’s trip to Nebraska as Maryland’s struggles intensify scrutiny of his future. Speaking Tuesday, the Terrapins coach described his Monday meeting with athletic director Jim Smith as a routine discussion of the program and personnel. Asked about assurances regarding his position, Locksley indicated he was not seeking them and remained focused on preparing his team. That preparation follows a 54-3 home defeat against UCLA in Maryland’s Big Ten opener. The result compounded a loss to Virginia Tech, leaving the Terps with consecutive setbacks against programs led by new coaches.
Bowl success gives way to a slide
Locksley’s tenure included a breakthrough stretch from 2021-23, when Maryland won three consecutive bowl games for the first time. Sustaining that progress has proved difficult. The Terps finished 4-8 in 2024. Last year, a 4-0 start with freshman quarterback Malik Washington unraveled after Maryland surrendered home leads against Washington and Nebraska. The team did not win again that season. Maryland has lost 17 of its last 19 conference games. Its 20-game nonconference winning streak also ended against Virginia Tech, coached by former Terrapins assistant James Franklin. Washington then threw four interceptions in the UCLA defeat.
Little relief in the schedule
After Nebraska, Maryland visits Ohio State before returning home to face Rutgers on Oct. 17. An open date follows, adding another backdrop to the uncertainty surrounding Locksley. Locksley acknowledged supporters’ frustration and his players’ disappointment, emphasizing that improved performance is the way forward. He also described limiting outside distractions and encouraging players to keep their attention on the next opponent.
