Assessment of Post-Match Comments
Manchester United are examining remarks made by Lisandro Martínez after the 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid. The defender voiced frustration with director of football Jason Wilcox over summer transfer activity and suggested the squad lacked sufficient depth for high-stakes European nights. Club leaders met to discuss the interview on a day when players were off, and the squad is scheduled to reconvene at the training ground where Martínez will learn if further measures will follow.
Wilcox Position Remains Secure
Wilcox continues to have backing from United's senior figures. He joined as technical director in April 2024 and moved into the director of football role in December after Dan Ashworth left the club.
Recent Coaching Change Context
Ruben Amorim was dismissed in January after his working relationship with Wilcox deteriorated. Minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who played a central part in bringing Wilcox to the club, is understood to be satisfied with his contribution to the hierarchy.
