Gavin McKenna scored his first NHL goal on a high shot past Juuse Saros in the second period. The 18-year-old received a pass from Auston Matthews before celebrating on one knee at Scotiabank Arena. He also recorded an assist on William Nylander's opening goal, marking his first NHL point overall.
Toronto finished with a 5-4 overtime victory. The Maple Leafs had missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade last spring before winning the draft lottery and selecting McKenna first overall in June. The club added several new players in the offseason, including goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, defenseman Darren Raddysh and winger Kirill Marchenko.
The Yukon native spent the previous season at Penn State after starring in the Canadian Hockey League. Entering the contest, McKenna averaged 14 minutes, 32 seconds of ice time through three games along with three shots on target and a minus-3 rating.
