The Seattle Mariners have secured approval to speak with Houston Astros manager Joe Espada regarding their open managerial position. Espada's current contract extends through the end of October, and he has expressed interest in staying with the Astros following two American League West titles in the past three seasons.
Espada's Track Record
At age 51, Espada holds a 256-229 record as Astros manager. That includes an 81-81 mark this past season, when Houston became the first team in MLB history to reach the playoffs without a winning record. He joined the organization in 2018 as bench coach and helped secure a World Series title in 2022.
Seattle's Recent Challenges
The Mariners dismissed Dan Wilson last month after a 76-86 finish that placed them third in the AL West, five games behind Houston. The club captured the AL West in 2025 and came within one win of the World Series, yet offensive issues this past season prompted general manager Jerry Dipoto to seek something new. He noted that recent approaches have been insular and that the latest results call for an outside perspective to identify overlooked areas.
