Washington Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered a sprained right knee during the loss to the Indianapolis Colts. The injury occurred on a sack at the goal line, and his return timetable is unclear. Mariota had started the previous two games after replacing Jayden Daniels, who had been out with a dislocated left elbow. Daniels has completed a full game only five times since the start of the 2025 season.
Daniels and Others Expected Back
Coach Dan Quinn said Daniels will practice fully this week and is expected to start against the New York Giants on Sunday. The team is also hopeful that safety Nick Cross, right guard Sam Cosmi and running back Rachaad White can return. Wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who missed the most recent game with a hamstring issue, has an uncertain practice plan. Washington plays at the San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 19 before its bye.
Additional Losses
Rookie Athan Kaliakmanis took over after Mariota exited and finished 15 of 33 for 183 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Punt and kick returner Jaylin Lane suffered a fractured and dislocated ankle that ends his season. He had averaged 13.7 yards per punt return with two touchdowns the previous year and 12.0 yards on punt returns along with 24.6 yards on kick returns this season. Mariota had started eight games last season and appeared in 17 total since joining the team in 2024, throwing 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
