Cameo at the black-tie scene
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford appears in Taylor Swift’s music video for Patient Zero. The Super Bowl LVI champion and reigning NFL MVP shows up at a formal gathering with his wife, Kelly Stafford. The clip also features actors Colin Farrell, Dakota Johnson, and Cara Delevingne. Standing near Stafford is former Los Angeles Kings center Jarret Stoll, a two-time Stanley Cup winner.
Friendship circle behind the booking
The pairing is less random than it first looks. The Staffords are friends with Swift and her husband, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and Stoll and his wife Erin Andrews belong to the same circle. Those couples attended the Madison Square Garden wedding of Swift and Kelce this summer, along with Charissa Thompson and Steven Cundari, who is also visible in the black-tie sequence beside Farrell. Andrews and Thompson had openly backed the Swift-Kelce connection on their podcast well before the couple began dating. The Staffords’ four daughters are known Swift fans. Kelly shared in 2024 that she and Matthew surprised the girls with an Eras Tour trip in New Orleans, and Kelly and the daughters later attended the June premiere of Toy Story 5 in Los Angeles, where Swift made a surprise performance appearance.
Why Stafford said yes
Stafford filmed the cameo during the offseason and cited his daughters as a central reason he took part, noting Swift wanted to offer the family that experience. He said the girls love the track and have kept it on repeat, including during a car ride to soccer. He also left impressed by watching Swift handle directing, producing, writing, and live editing in real time, describing the day as memorable for the whole family while downplaying any future acting plans.
Emmy hint decoded
Swift had already sent fans hunting for clues in a prerecorded skit at the 87th Emmy Awards alongside her cat Olivia Benson and host Mariska Hargitay. In that bit she spoke of something hiding in plain sight tied to Saccharide Aries from the vineyard north or south. After the Stafford reveal, Aries was read as a nod to the ram symbol linked to the Rams. Saccharide pointed to Farrell’s role in Sugar, vineyard to an old French root associated with Delevingne, and north or south to Dakota.
