Maye’s mistakes leave Patriots searching

Drake Maye’s difficult start has become a central concern for New England heading into Week 4 of the 2026 season. After a 35-6 defeat against Jacksonville, coach Mike Vrabel raised the possibility of simplifying the offense. Maye has thrown six interceptions in three games. Including last season’s playoffs, his seven-game stretch features 1,413 passing yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. The problems extend beyond the quarterback. Protection has been unreliable, and A.J. Brown’s absence has left a major hole in a passing attack built to feature him. Josh McDaniels’ demanding scheme adds another challenge, but Maye’s costly mistakes remain especially difficult for the Patriots to absorb.

Different concerns for Ward and Herbert

Tennessee still wants to give Cam Ward time despite his 3-17 starting record. His work ethic and limited interception total offer reasons for patience, but accuracy, decision-making and his adjustment to Brian Daboll’s offense remain concerns. The Titans are averaging 12 points, leaving little room for continued growing pains. Justin Herbert has a much longer record of success, yet the Chargers’ offense under Mike McDaniel has struggled to function. Offensive line injuries, an ineffective running game and disappointing receiver development have compounded questions about whether the personnel suits the scheme. The upcoming stretch offers little relief: Seattle, Denver and Kansas City await before the bye.

Quarterback trade market could expand

J.J. McCarthy’s move to the Giants may not be the last quarterback deal. Potential availability elsewhere depends heavily on injuries and changing depth-chart priorities. Arizona could consider moving Jacoby Brissett or Gardner Minshew II if it turns to rookie Carson Beck. Philadelphia also has flexibility involving Tanner McKee and Andy Dalton, while Jacksonville’s regard for Quinn Ewers could make Nick Mullens a candidate to move. Those possibilities remain conditional rather than settled plans. With six established starters already sidelined through the opening three weeks, however, demand for quarterback depth could grow.
