Family backs players’ request
John and Christina Mayich are supporting a request to place the Arizona State hockey coaches involved in their son’s Aug. 20 outdoor workout on administrative leave while an independent investigation takes place. The parents of Matthew Mayich released their position Tuesday through family attorney Rob Carey. Their statement followed a Monday letter from seven ASU hockey players to university president Michael Crow seeking leave for the coaches and an investigation by an outside agency. The players submitted their letter anonymously through an attorney because they feared retaliation. They also challenged aspects of the university’s initial probe and requested an interim coaching staff if the coaches involved were placed on leave. The Mayich family emphasized that it supports the team’s season while seeking accountability and a process that allows players to speak freely without fearing consequences from their coaches.
Police findings await independent review
Mayich, a 21-year-old defenseman drafted by the St. Louis Blues, collapsed during the workout on the opening day of NCAA-permitted official activities. According to Carey, exertional heat stroke restricted oxygen flow to his brain, and he is unlikely to recover. Arizona State police are investigating. Their completed report will go to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for independent review. In a Friday letter to Carey, County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said her office had remained in contact with ASU police throughout the investigation. She did not commit to opening a separate inquiry but said her office would assess whether investigators had taken all appropriate steps and gathered the evidence needed. Mitchell also urged cooperation with the police investigation rather than a simultaneous separate inquiry. Arizona’s House and Senate education committee chairs have called for an independent investigation after reviewing the players’ letter.
