Top Three Tightens After Losses
Miami moved into the No. 1 position in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2002. BYU reached No. 2, its highest ranking since 1984. Five of the top seven teams lost during the week, the first time that has happened in the poll's 90-year history. Notre Dame and Georgia remained in the top five despite close defeats. Miami received 40 of the 70 first-place votes and finished 22 points ahead of BYU, which earned 20 first-place votes. Ohio State collected the remaining nine first-place votes and stayed just behind the Cougars.
Hurricanes and Cougars Benefit From Chaos
Miami took over the top spot from Georgia after the Bulldogs lost at home to an unranked opponent. The Hurricanes stayed unbeaten with a double-overtime win over Florida State. BYU improved to 6-0 with a 28-24 victory over Notre Dame. Miami became the first ACC team at No. 1 since Clemson in 2020. The Cougars had not been higher than No. 4 since their 1984 national title season and had not appeared in the top five since 1996.
Midweek Matchups Carry Weight
No. 7 Mississippi visits No. 19 Texas while No. 14 Houston travels to No. 10 Utah. The Rebels have outscored their last two opponents by a combined 83-20. Utah remained unbeaten after escaping as a 15.5-point favorite in its prior game. Alabama dropped seven spots to No. 13 after its loss at Tennessee, and Texas fell 12 places to No. 19.
