Late drama turns against Michigan
Michigan found itself on the wrong end of a decisive finish against Iowa, which scored the winning touchdown as time expired. For the Wolverines, the ending offered a painful contrast to their controversial last-second victory earlier in the season. That reversal put Michigan in the spotlight of the post-Week 4 Bottom 10 discussion.
Wins remain scarce across the FBS
September ended with 27 of the nation’s 138 FBS programs holding just a single victory. That group included 22 teams at 1-3, four at 1-2 and another at 1-4. Meanwhile, four teams were still without a win. Conference USA had a particularly heavy concentration of struggling teams, with five of its 10 members sitting at 1-3. The eight-team Pac-12 had three teams with that record. In the Sun Belt, three teams in the East and two in the West had managed only a single win.
Defensive trouble and missed opportunities
Northern Illinois lost 35-14 to Georgia State, adding a Sun Belt defeat to losses against opponents from the Big Ten, Missouri Valley and Big 12. ULM’s defensive struggles also stood out: the Hawks had allowed 171 points through four games, the most in the nation. Bowling Green came close to changing its fortunes against unbeaten USF but surrendered a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The Falcons fell to 0-4 while the Bulls reached 4-0, leaving Bowling Green still searching for a breakthrough.
