Wild-card round reaches its close
The MLB wild-card round finished on Thursday after the only series that needed a third game. That finale matched the Philadelphia Phillies at the Atlanta Braves, with every contest played at Truist Park. The format across the round was a best-of-three, and all games in each series were staged at the home park of the higher seed.
Other series decided in two games
Three of the wild-card pairings did not go the distance. The Chicago White Sox and Houston Astros completed their series in two games. The same held for the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, who played exclusively at Yankee Stadium, and for the Chicago Cubs at the San Diego Padres. Those quicker finishes left only the Phillies-Braves set to use the full allotment of games.
Division leaders rest and reset
The Tampa Bay Rays, Cleveland Guardians, Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers used the extra days to rest regulars and organize pitching plans. Those teams now turn toward the next round, where they will meet the wild-card winners beginning Saturday.
