Star moves reshape camp priorities
NBA training camps opened following Monday’s media day with familiar stars adjusting to unfamiliar surroundings. Philadelphia added Jaylen Brown and LeBron James during July, making their integration a central preseason storyline for the Sixers. The changes extend well beyond Philadelphia. The Lakers acquired former Jazz center Walker Kessler, while Giannis Antetokounmpo moved to Miami. Minnesota paired LaMelo Ball with Anthony Edwards, and Portland brought in Ja Morant for a fresh start. Camp offers those teams an opportunity to begin turning major roster changes into workable combinations.
Health remains a defining question
Boston’s decision to trade Brown puts greater responsibility on Jayson Tatum. He returned from an Achilles injury before last season ended, but his regular-season shooting percentages declined and left knee discomfort kept him out of Game 7 in the opening round. Denver faces its own availability concerns with Aaron Gordon, who missed 46 games last season. His recent playoff appearances have also been disrupted by hamstring and calf problems, leaving his health especially important as the Nuggets’ depth around Nikola Jokic has diminished. Charlotte, meanwhile, will begin preparations without Kon Knueppel. A moderate hamstring injury is expected to keep him out throughout camp and into the season.
Detroit waits on Duren
Jalen Duren’s unresolved contract situation hangs over the Pistons after he missed Monday’s media day. He is also not expected to participate when camp begins. Detroit improved from 44 wins to 60 last season with chemistry and continuity helping drive that progress. After offseason roster changes, uncertainty around Duren threatens to complicate preparations in a competitive Eastern Conference.
