Limits on Parlays and Player Props
The NBA has directed authorized sportsbooks to stop offering certain player prop bets this season. Bettors can no longer combine the under on one player's statistics into a single parlay. Additional markets now off limits include wagers on the opening tip winner, whether a player misses a specific shot and unders for athletes projected to play fewer than 12 minutes. Sportsbooks also cannot provide alternate unders that carry larger payouts. The league estimates its partner operators cover upward of 99 percent of the legal U.S. market and says the changes strike a balance between curbing risky bets and avoiding a shift to unregulated activity.
Response to Prior Schemes
The restrictions follow federal cases that featured parlays built around unders on single players. One such wager placed 80,000 dollars on multiple unders and stood to return about 1.1 million dollars if successful. In that instance the player exited after three minutes. A similar approach appeared in an earlier matter where the player left after roughly nine minutes. Those examples prompted the league to act on low-likelihood, high-payout combinations that had raised integrity questions.
New Monitoring and Training Steps
The NBA is expanding its internal AI monitoring system to flag unusual betting patterns and has arranged in-person training for teams on betting rules. A former player and federal agent will lead the sessions. The league is also updating its fan code of conduct to address harassment of players and staff by bettors, offering an opt-in social media protection service and a text hotline for reporting threats.
