A sharper distinction on push-offs
The NBA is asking referees to take a stricter approach to offensive push-offs next season as part of updated guidance covering four areas of officiating. Announced Tuesday, the emphasis targets players who use their off arm to illegally separate from a defender. Incidental positioning contact will remain permissible, but forceful contact or full arm extension that produces an advantage should result in an offensive foul. The league’s framework separates contact used to locate an opponent or establish position from actions that displace a defender. Monty McCutchen, the NBA’s senior vice president of referee development and training, acknowledged that deciding where firm contact becomes excessive force will be the difficult part. The league plans more frequent early-season discussions with its Competition Committee to review borderline examples.
Perimeter and paint both in focus
The guidance applies beyond jump shots. In video examples released by the league, Jaylen Brown used a forearm shove against Kelly Oubre to create shooting room, while RJ Barrett pushed Evan Mobley backward during a drive. Both actions would warrant offensive fouls under the framework. The emphasis arrives after teams averaged 115.6 points last season, the league’s highest scoring average since 1969-70. It follows previous efforts to curb offensive tactics designed to manufacture contact and draw free throws.
Screens and direct routes also addressed
Referees will also watch for illegal offensive contact on screens, including shoves, and defensive grabbing or holding that restricts off-ball movement. Another focus concerns opponents traveling directly toward the basket. Each player is entitled to maintain that route, but either can commit a foul by deviating to knock the other off course.
