New Lottery Setup Aims to Curb Late-Season Blowouts

Fewer Blowouts Expected
Last season saw 281 games decided by 20 or more points, topping the prior mark of 259. That figure had risen from 235 and then 232 in recent years, with 22 percent of contests qualifying as blowouts. Five of the six highest proportions of such games have occurred since 2021. The increase accelerated after February, especially in matchups with the weakest clubs. Removing the prior reward for losing should limit that late surge and keep more contests closer.
Tighter Records in the Middle
A record 19 teams posted winning records, aided by lopsided results against the bottom clubs. One squad finished 42-40 after going 16-2 versus the six weakest teams, while another reached 45-37 on a 17-1 mark in those games. The Warriors ended at 37-45 as the lone club between 32 and 43 wins. Even modest improvements by the bottom six would redistribute roughly 30 wins, likely producing more teams clustered near.500.
Subtler Roster Experiments
Teams previously leaned on short-term contracts and two-way players to fill minutes in April. Several clubs that lost 50 or more games allowed over 120 points per 100 possessions, with three posting the highest defensive ratings in league history. Without the same pressure to lose, clubs are expected to give additional run to actual prospects rather than fringe talent, creating steadier lineups down the stretch.
