Movies and mythology take the ice
The NHL’s goalie masks offer another outlet for personality as the season begins, with designs ranging from understated team branding to elaborate scenes drawn from film and mythology. Returning artwork also features prominently alongside fresh looks. Washington Capitals goalie Logan Thompson’s design celebrates films connected to D.C., while Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Joseph Woll draws on his enthusiasm for The Lord of the Rings. Woll’s fantasy-inspired mask depicts the confrontation between Gandalf and Balrog. Elsewhere, Jakub Dobes uses Game of Thrones imagery, placing a large wolf above glowing swords. Ullmark takes a mythological approach with Fenrir and Tyr, pairing their battle with the Senators logo.
Local landmarks shape the artwork
Woll’s alternate design turns toward Philadelphia history, featuring Benjamin Franklin with a kite, the Liberty Bell and the U.S. Constitution. Swayman’s historical Boston theme incorporates the USS Constitution and Boston Custom House Tower, with a bruin positioned above the face opening. Shesterkin’s New York-inspired artwork combines an apple with the city skyline and Brooklyn Bridge. For Los Angeles Kings goalie Darcy Kuemper, local beaches provide inspiration. Forsberg instead embraces the city’s angel association, including sculptures along the sides and his children on the back beside angel wings.
Pets, family roots and awareness
Edmonton Oilers goalie Tristan Jarry keeps his dogs central to his design, adding cartoon characters Tom and Jerry across the top. Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger opts for monster otters in light and dark green variations. Personal connections extend beyond favorite animals. Murashov blends imagery from Russia and Pittsburgh, while Silovs incorporates Latvian hockey emblem details on the chin. Carolina Hurricanes goalie Brandon Bussi returns to a mask used during the previous Stanley Cup run. Alongside the team logo, puzzle pieces across the top highlight autism awareness.
