Jokic’s commitment remains with Denver
Nikola Jokic used Monday’s media day to reinforce his intention to stay with the Nuggets, saying he plans to sign a long-term extension next summer. The delay offers a significant financial benefit: Jokic could become eligible for a five-year supermax valued at roughly $350 million. While leaving the deal unsigned has stirred uncertainty among fans, Jokic indicated that his preference remains firmly with Denver. Executive vice president of basketball operations Ben Tenzer also expressed confidence in the relationship. For Jokic, staying is tied to the legacy he wants to build. After helping transform Denver into a championship team in 2023, he believes the Nuggets can still contend. He views Stephen Curry’s continued commitment to Golden State as a model for a career rooted in the franchise that drafted him.
Nuggets look beyond playoff disappointment
Jokic enters the season after averaging 27.7 points, 12.9 rebounds and 10.7 assists and finishing behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in MVP voting. Denver is looking to rebound from a first-round playoff exit against Minnesota. Coach David Adelman pointed to injuries and a poorly timed downturn rather than treating the elimination as the full measure of a team that won 54 games and earned the No. 3 seed. Christian Braun said his troublesome ankle is healthy, while Aaron Gordon described a greater emphasis on preparation and recovery after dealing with soft-tissue problems, including calf tightness during the playoffs. The supporting cast has also changed. Peyton Watson departed for Cleveland in a five-team trade in late August, while veteran DeMar DeRozan arrived still seeking his first championship. Jokic’s stated commitment gives Denver a reassuring foundation as it pursues another title run.
