Manager Stands by Star

Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts said Tuesday that Shohei Ohtani will start in Game 3 of the NLCS on Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers. The decision came after the team returned home and Ohtani made clear he feels ready to contribute. Roberts noted he has full confidence in the player and saw no reason to alter the plan following discussions about his condition.

Performance Challenges

Ohtani has gone through a difficult stretch at the plate, including an 0-for-4 outing in the 7-4 loss on Monday that left the Dodgers in a 2-0 hole. He has not hit a home run since August 18 and has recorded just one run batted in since then. In the playoffs so far he is 3-for-20, and his regular-season finish included 11 hits in 70 at-bats with 29 strikeouts.

Health and Adjustments

The player has dealt with left knee and right arm issues that limited his pitching earlier in the year and have carried over into his hitting. After spending two weeks on the injured list last month, he reported that symptoms have eased considerably. Ohtani said he accepts responsibility for results and plans to make further adjustments to his approach while focusing on clean movement in his swing.
