Florida faces a prove-it season
The Panthers enter 2026-27 atop the consensus Stanley Cup market despite missing the playoffs during an injury-hit campaign. Their return to contention is a central storyline in a race that still features familiar powers alongside defending champion Carolina. Florida added Brady Tkachuk to join brother Matthew, while Aleksander Barkov returns after a knee injury sidelined him for all of 2025-26. Those additions offer substantial reasons for optimism, but health and goaltending remain unresolved tests. Jacob Markstrom and Akira Schmid take over from Sergei Bobrovsky as the Panthers try to recover their championship form.
Carolina brings stability; Colorado seeks a finish
The Hurricanes have a more settled foundation after finally turning sustained playoff contention into a championship. Rod Brind’Amour’s possession-focused approach remains supported by a deep roster led by Sebastian Aho. Carolina retains much of its title-winning group, with Brandon Bussi and Pyotr Kochetkov handling the crease following Frederik Andersen’s departure. Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake could take on greater responsibility after strong playoff performances. Colorado also belongs among the leading challengers, powered by Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar and Martin Necas. Yet its dominant regular season ended with a sweep by Vegas, leaving the Avalanche to address the gap between their regular-season strength and postseason results.
Established challengers carry questions
Edmonton remains dangerous with Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard, but depth and goal prevention are concerns after its early exit against Anaheim. New coach Mike Babcock inherits a reshaped team and a goaltending group featuring Andersen, Tristan Jarry and Devon Levi. Vegas hopes better health and new coach Ryan Craig can build on its run to the Cup Final. Tampa Bay must translate regular-season quality into playoff progress, while Minnesota’s talented core has raised expectations despite a subsequent series defeat to Colorado.
