Lewis sidelined as evaluations continue
The Carolina Panthers will be without starting left guard Damien Lewis for Sunday night’s matchup against the Detroit Lions because of an elbow injury involving his ulnar collateral ligament. The injury has been described as a tear, with medical evaluations still underway. Lewis is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks, but Carolina’s Week 5 bye leaves open the possibility that he misses only one game. His return timeline remains unsettled. Lewis sustained the injury during the first half of Carolina’s 21-18 defeat against the Cleveland Browns. He came back in the third quarter and played through the remainder of the game.
Another setback for Carolina’s lineup
Lewis’ absence removes a player who has been among Carolina’s strongest offensive linemen through three games. Elsewhere along the line, left tackle Rasheed Walker has struggled after joining the Panthers on a one-year contract in March, while rookie Monroe Freeling has handled the right side. Carolina also remains without top cornerback Jaycee Horn, who is out indefinitely with a torn quad suffered in the Week 3 loss to Cleveland. There could be help available after the bye. Longtime starting tackles Taylor Moton and Ikem Ekwonu will be eligible to return from the non-football injury and physically unable to perform lists, respectively. Moton has been dealing with a blood clot, while Ekwonu has a patellar tendon injury. Eligibility does not establish when either player will return to action.
