Starting cornerbacks sidelined

The Carolina Panthers placed Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson on injured reserve Wednesday, leaving their defense without its starting cornerbacks for at least four games. Both were hurt during the Week 3 defeat to the Cleveland Browns. Horn suffered a quad injury that coach Dave Canales had described as significant, making his move to injured reserve expected. Jackson's availability had been less clear after he injured his groin and exited the Browns game before halftime. The absences strip Carolina of a productive coverage partnership. Jackson paced the NFL with 19 pass breakups last season, while the duo totaled nine interceptions in 2025. Horn also earned Pro Bowl recognition in consecutive seasons.

Depth faces immediate test

Will Lee, Carolina's 2026 fourth-round selection, Chau Smith-Wade and special teams contributor Akayleb Evans will be called upon with the starters unavailable. The Panthers added veteran Robert Rochell to their practice squad Wednesday, where Corey Thornton, Zion Childress and undrafted rookie DeVonta Smith provide additional options. Canales had stressed that matching Horn's impact was not a realistic expectation for his replacement. His message instead centered on available players handling their own responsibilities. That challenge now extends to both starting boundary positions.

Injury concerns extend beyond coverage

Carolina is also dealing with an elbow ligament injury expected to sideline starting left guard Damien Lewis for a few weeks. Quarterback Bryce Young, receivers Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette, safety Nick Scott and linebacker Devin Lloyd have injuries under evaluation. With Coker and Legette questionable, the Panthers promoted veteran receiver David Moore from the practice squad. Running back Anthony Tyus III was also promoted after making his NFL debut against Cleveland, adding depth behind Chuba Hubbard and AJ Dillon while Jonathon Brooks remains on injured reserve. The Panthers host the Detroit Lions in Week 4 before their bye.
