Moton's Diagnosis and Recovery
Carolina Panthers right tackle Taylor Moton, 32, experienced coughing up blood and chest discomfort after a youth football camp in Lansing, Mich., leading to a late June diagnosis of multiple blood clots in his right lung. The condition kept him out of all training camp and preseason work plus early regular season action. Doctors placed him on blood thinners and advised against contact to avoid complications such as brain bleeds. He focused on non-contact simulations and later consulted a bloodwork specialist while traveling only once with the team to Jacksonville, Fla.
Return to Practice
The Panthers activated Moton's 21-day practice window from the non-football injury list, allowing him to take part in his first padded session of the year on Tuesday. He has been off blood thinners for a couple of weeks after his blood levels stabilized. Moton weighed the risks of recurrence, which doctors described as relatively low after three months of treatment, and expressed increased appreciation for the game and daily life. He is preparing as if he will play in the upcoming Week 6 matchup.
Additional Roster Moves
Defensive end Turk Wharton, sidelined since training camp with a neck issue, and running back Trevor Etienne, who suffered an ankle injury in the preseason finale, also had their 21-day windows opened from the physically unable to perform list and injured reserve. Nose tackle Cam Jackson was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury that requires season-ending surgery, leaving three open spots on the 53-man roster.
