Offensive Rookies Step Up
First-round pick Caleb Lomu has handled extra duties at left tackle and as a jumbo tight end after an injury to a veteran starter. The 6-foot-6, 313-pound lineman logged extended snaps in a 45-17 win. Third-round selection Eli Raridon has taken 40 percent of offensive snaps as the No. 2 tight end, recording eight receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown.
Defensive and Special Teams Impact
Second-round linebacker Gabe Jacas has played 60.7 percent of defensive snaps and posted 15 tackles along with 1.5 sacks and one interception. Sixth-round linebacker Namdi Obiazor has appeared on 104 special teams snaps and shares the team lead in special teams tackles with an undrafted rookie. The Patriots rookies have combined for 355 special teams snaps, second only to one other club.
Development Focus Remains
The team has stressed continued investment in the young players even when they are not seeing 80 percent of the snaps. Several undrafted rookies have contributed on special teams, while other draftees continue to develop behind veterans.
