Injury Occurs Late
Michael Penix Jr. suffered a rib injury in the closing moments of a 30-23 overtime defeat to the Ravens. He was sacked with 27 seconds remaining in regulation while the score was tied and briefly remained on the ground before walking off. Backup Tua Tagovailoa entered for a single play, after which Penix returned to the field. The Falcons punted, sending the contest into overtime where Penix stayed out. Tagovailoa threw an interception to Kyle Hamilton with 2:11 remaining in the extra period.
Performance Before Exit
Penix completed 19 of 32 passes for 240 yards and one touchdown without throwing an interception before the injury. He had recently returned in Week 3 from left ACL surgery, his third such procedure overall. Earlier in the season the offense managed just 16 points across the first two weeks while Penix and Tagovailoa were sidelined, but scored 80 points across Penix's initial two starts upon his return.
Recovery Outlook
Penix indicated he would focus on treatment to prepare for the next game rather than miss additional time. Coach Kevin Stefanski observed that Penix struggled to stay comfortable on the bench during the Ravens' overtime drive. Running back Bijan Robinson expressed hope the injury amounts to no more than a bruise.
