Howard sidelined as conference play begins
Penn State will be without leading wide receiver Koby Howard for an extended stretch after further evaluation of the injury he suffered against Buffalo last week. Coach Matt Campbell said Wednesday that the undisclosed injury is not expected to end Howard’s season, but his absence could be lengthy. That assessment was less optimistic than Campbell’s update Tuesday, when he said Howard would undergo additional evaluation later in the week. The news comes as No. 13 Penn State prepares to host unranked Wisconsin on Saturday to begin Big Ten play. Campbell also indicated that Howard has handled the setback well despite the disappointment.
An explosive target to replace
Howard was injured on a 70-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter against Buffalo. The sophomore finished with three catches for 115 yards and also scored on a 20-yard run during Penn State’s 55-13 victory. His production has made him a standout in the conference. Howard leads the Big Ten with 28.7 yards per reception, a mark that ranks third nationally. His 344 receiving yards place him fourth in the league. With Howard unavailable, Penn State will look to Brett Eskildsen, Chase Sowell and other receivers to take on more of the workload.
