Current Status and Recent Developments
Kristaps Porzingis will stay out indefinitely due to a private health-related issue but will keep close to the Warriors organization. He contacted general manager Mike Dunleavy before training camp to explain he would not report and skipped the trip to Hawaii along with the first five preseason games. While the team was in Las Vegas, Porzingis visited the downtown San Francisco facility to meet with Dunleavy and lead medical decision-maker Rick Celebrini. The organization will keep details of that discussion private, and Porzingis is expected to be present as the group finishes preseason work.
Health Background and Contract Details
Porzingis is not yet cleared to practice, and the team will provide updates on any return to action when appropriate. Two seasons ago he dealt with an upper respiratory virus that has continued to affect his ability to play consistently. Last season he appeared in 34 games split between the Atlanta Hawks and Warriors after a midseason trade that sent Jonathan Kuminga to Atlanta. This summer the Warriors re-signed him to a two-year, $40 million contract structured so only $3 million of the $20 million for next season is guaranteed, allowing flexibility for a possible trade.
Team Adjustments in His Absence
Coach Steve Kerr has indicated a preference for a smaller starting group featuring Stephen Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Gui Santos, Yaxel Lendeborg and Draymond Green while Porzingis works through his health situation. The veteran center has described the ongoing issues as frustrating and noted they have built on prior injuries, but he expressed confidence in returning to full health with patience and medical support.
