Higher Volume and Better Results
Teams have turned to the Automated Ball-Strike System more often in the playoffs than they did in the regular season. Across the first 25 postseason games, clubs averaged 4.8 challenges per game compared with 4.3 earlier in the year. Batter-initiated reviews increased to 2.04 per game from 1.96. Batters succeeded on 29 of 51 attempts, or 57 percent, after succeeding at 49 percent before the playoffs.
Catchers Lead the Way
Catchers maintained a strong record, winning 42 of 70 challenges for a 60 percent rate that was nearly identical to their regular-season figure. Pitchers recorded one successful challenge. Among the teams that reached the League Championship Series, Cleveland won seven of 13 appeals, Milwaukee eight of 16, Tampa Bay three of five and the Dodgers two of six. Atlanta led all clubs with 14 wins from 22 challenges, while the White Sox recorded 12 wins from 31 attempts.
Individual Standouts and Umpire Trends
Several catchers posted strong marks, including one who won all four challenges and another who succeeded on five of six. One batter won both of his appeals while another went eight for 12. Four umpires among the 25 who worked the opening rounds had every challenge upheld. Other umpires saw higher overturn rates, with one reversed on 10 of 12 and another on seven of 10.
