Costly Fourth-Inning Mistakes
A pair of defensive lapses by Jose Ramirez opened the door for three unearned runs that decided Game 2. With the score tied at zero and two outs, Victor Mesa Jr. stood on first when Chandler Simpson beat out an infield chopper. Ramirez, positioned toward second base, left third uncovered while watching the throw to first. Mesa took advantage by racing from second to third.
Error Extends the Damage
Four pitches later Ben Williamson sent a grounder that skipped past Ramirez at third base and into left field, allowing Mesa to score the game's first run. Liam Hicks followed with a two-run single into right-center that gave the Rays a 3-0 lead they never relinquished. The Guardians could not recover and fell 3-1.
Ramirez Reflects on Game 1 Heroics
Ramirez collected three hits and scored twice during the 7-3 victory in Game 1. The seven-time All-Star had also homered in the final two games of the Division Series as Cleveland rallied from a 2-0 deficit to advance.
