Hand injury sidelines Jung
The Rangers will finish the regular season without Josh Jung after placing the third baseman on the 10-day injured list Saturday because of a broken right hand. The move leaves Texas without a productive bat at a critical point in the American League West race. Jung was struck on the hand by a pitch from Twins starter Joe Ryan during the first inning Friday at Target Field. He initially remained in the game and came around to score, but Texas later replaced him with a pinch hitter.
Another interruption after strong return
Jung hit.299 with 12 home runs, 42 RBIs and an.827 OPS across 104 games this season. He had already lost all of August to a left calf strain before returning with a strong stretch at the plate. In 12 games following that return, Jung batted.341, collecting 15 hits in 44 at-bats. His latest injury removes that offensive contribution with only two regular-season games remaining.
Roster moves amid division pressure
Texas recalled left-hander Robby Ahlstrom and catcher Logan O'Hoppe from Triple-A Round Rock while optioning right-hander Gavin Collyer to the Arizona Complex League Rangers. Ahlstrom has posted a 6.08 ERA over 37 innings in 42 relief appearances for Texas. O'Hoppe, acquired from the Angels in July, played in 10 games during his earlier stint with the Rangers. Texas began Saturday level with Houston for the AL West lead, but the Astros own the tiebreaker, adding urgency to the Rangers' remaining schedule.
