Rays bring versatility, but power remains crucial
Tampa Bay enters the 2026 postseason as a No. 1 seed with a profile built for more than slugging. The Rays struck out in just 18.7% of plate appearances, hit an MLB-leading.283 with runners in scoring position and led the American League in stolen bases. Drew Rasmussen fronts a rotation supported by Nick Martinez and Freddy Peralta, while a varied bullpen gives Tampa Bay options late in games. The concern is concentrated power. Junior Caminero hit 42 home runs, with Jonathan Aranda and Yandy Diaz adding 22 apiece. Together, they supplied more than half of the club’s 168 homers. If opponents contain that group, manufacturing enough offense against postseason pitching could become difficult. Liam Hicks could be especially important if teams work around Caminero.
Cleveland’s path runs through the mound
The Guardians have the pitching to threaten the field. Gavin Williams and Parker Messick lead the rotation, and a bullpen with the majors’ highest strikeout rate is anchored by Cade Smith, who finished with 41 saves and a 1.95 ERA. There is little room for those arms to stumble. Cleveland finished 27th in home runs and had no 20-homer hitter. Steven Kwan’s resurgence offers a spark: he leads the majors in on-base percentage since the beginning of July. Getting him aboard and converting limited chances will be central to Cleveland’s hopes.
Astros need Alvarez and help
Yordan Alvarez gives Houston a dangerous centerpiece despite weaknesses elsewhere. His career postseason line of.294/.393/.551 across 60 games underscores the challenge awaiting opposing pitchers. Jeremy Peña, Isaac Paredes and Yainer Diaz offer support, but pitching is the bigger uncertainty. Hunter Brown is the standout in an otherwise unsettled rotation. For Houston to sustain a run, Alvarez’s production likely must be matched by a major contribution on the mound.
