Hand trouble resurfaces
Roman Anthony’s availability for Game 2 of Boston’s AL Wild Card Series against New York remains uncertain after renewed trouble with the hand that cost him nearly four months of the regular season. Anthony experienced discomfort on multiple check swings against Yankees starter Cam Schlittler in Game 1. Andruw Monasterio replaced him as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning. Manager Chad Tracy indicated Anthony was dealing with considerable discomfort, but the extent of the injury was not yet clear. Boston needs a win Wednesday to extend the best-of-three series after falling 9-0 in the opener.
A difficult setback for Boston’s lineup
Anthony originally suffered a partially torn tendon in his right ring finger in early May. Although the injury initially was not viewed as severe, he did not return until late August. Over 25 regular-season games following his return, he hit.262/.321/.476 with four home runs and 10 RBIs. Boston put Anthony atop the order as its designated hitter Tuesday, but the offense again struggled against Schlittler. The uncertainty surrounding Anthony adds to an already difficult offensive picture. Boston finished September with a major league-low 71 runs and has been searching for power throughout the season. Removing Anthony from the postseason roster would carry another consequence: He could not return before the American League Championship Series.
