Injury Details
The Rangers announced that their starting goaltender suffered a right knee injury during Friday's contest against the Capitals and will miss the rest of the season. The 30-year-old Russian was helped off the ice without putting weight on his right leg after jamming his skate into the post while sliding back into the crease. He had stopped 13 of 14 shots before exiting with the score tied.
Season Context
The 2022 Vezina Trophy winner had posted a 3-1 record and 1.76 goals-against average this season. He became the first Rangers goalie to score a goal last week by sending the puck the length of the ice into an empty net. Last season a lower-body issue caused him to miss a month and contributed to the team finishing last in the Eastern Conference.
Backup Options
The 24-year-old backup made his fifth NHL appearance and second this season after being recalled from Hartford. He allowed the go-ahead goal but finished with 11 saves on 12 shots. The team had acquired a 32-year-old veteran from the Bruins last summer to serve as backup, but that player was placed on injured reserve last week with his own lower-body issue.
