Core Rating Principles
SP+ delivers a tempo- and opponent-adjusted view of efficiency designed to predict future performance rather than reward past results. Strong but unlucky losses tend to improve a team's standing, while unimpressive wins can cause the rating to drop. The system focuses on sustainable elements of play and phases out preseason projections, including special teams components, as the season advances.
Resume Evaluation Method
Resume SP+ measures each team's scoring margin, capped at 50 points per contest, against expectations for an average top-five team. A seven-point deduction applies for every loss. By season's end, very few squads post a positive mark because surpassing the top-five benchmark proves difficult.
Strength of Schedule Context
SP+ strength of schedule calculates the expected win percentage an average top-five team would achieve against a given slate. A mark of.850 equates to an 85 percent success rate or 10.2 victories over a 12-game schedule. Lower percentages indicate tougher schedules and receive higher priority in the rankings.
