Curry takes less to give Warriors flexibility

Stephen Curry has agreed to a two-year, $116 million extension with the Golden State Warriors, keeping his future tied to the franchise while leaving room for roster moves. The agreement includes a player option in 2028-29. Curry accepted $20 million less than his maximum salary, a concession that gives Golden State significant salary-cap space next summer. He became eligible on Aug. 29 for an extension worth as much as $136.7 million over two years, beyond his current one-year, $62.6 million expiring contract. The Warriors offered several paths, including a maximum extension, smaller reductions and the chance to delay a decision until the front office had a clearer picture of what added flexibility could produce. Curry considered his options for nearly a month before settling on the deal.

Attention turns to training camp

The agreement allows Curry and the Warriors to move toward the season without an unresolved contract decision. Curry had indicated that he wanted to avoid distractions as the team prepared to return to work. At 38, Curry is entering his 18th NBA season after persistent right knee pain and swelling restricted him to 43 games last season. He nevertheless averaged 26.6 points, 4.7 assists and 3.6 rebounds while shooting 46.8% from the field. During a team gathering in San Diego organized by Jimmy Butler, Curry expressed confidence in his physical readiness for training camp after the offseason. Golden State begins practice next week in Hawaii before opening the regular season against the Lakers in Los Angeles on Oct. 21.
