A championship partnership ends
Jayson Tatum is embracing a more prominent leadership role in Boston after the Celtics traded Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers this offseason, ending a partnership that helped deliver the 2024 NBA championship. Speaking at Monday’s media day, Tatum expressed appreciation for their shared development and achievements. Brown, the 2024 NBA Finals MVP, departed in a deal driven largely by Boston’s effort to reduce costs, with the pair’s $300 million contracts creating long-term salary-cap concerns. The decision leaves Tatum as Boston’s clear centerpiece while strengthening a division rival. Philadelphia also added LeBron James during the offseason.
New personnel, familiar approach
The Celtics received Paul George in the Brown trade and added Mitchell Robinson and Mike Conley Jr. Tatum said he feels prepared to guide the reworked roster, emphasizing that effective leadership requires understanding both himself and the needs of his teammates. Coach Joe Mazzulla does not view Brown’s departure as an automatic reason to overhaul Boston’s style. His focus is on identifying the strengths of the current group and accounting for how returning players have developed. George, meanwhile, sees his job as complementing Tatum and addressing whatever needs emerge on the court. He plans to bring versatility rather than limit himself to a single responsibility.
Tatum encouraged by recovery
Tatum reported feeling stronger as he reached the 16-month point following Achilles surgery. He tore the tendon during the 2025 NBA playoffs and later missed Game 7 of Boston’s first-round series against Philadelphia last season. An offseason devoted to strength, explosiveness and overall conditioning has left him feeling better than at the same stage last year. George brings his own experience of a lengthy recovery, having missed nearly all of the 2014-2015 season with Indiana after suffering a compound fracture in his right leg during a Team USA scrimmage.
