Guerrero changes course
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Apologized Friday for his comments about the reasoning behind his $500 million, 14-year contract with the Blue Jays, backing away from remarks he had defended earlier in the week. Speaking through a translator in Toronto, Guerrero said he regretted how he had expressed himself and believed his fans and teammates deserved an apology. He also pledged to keep working to justify the club’s investment. The controversy followed a Spanish-language interview in which Guerrero suggested the deal rewarded his previous accomplishments rather than his future production. A clip became public Wednesday. After Toronto’s loss at Baltimore that day eliminated the Blue Jays from postseason contention, he initially maintained his position. By Friday, Guerrero said further reflection had convinced him that his comments failed to communicate what he meant. He had also spoken with his father, Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, and apologized to his teammates.
A difficult season under a major deal
The apology comes during a frustrating opening season of Guerrero’s contract. He has hit.263 with nine home runs and 56 RBIs while dealing with a back injury, a concussion and right hamstring tightness. His homer and RBI totals are his lowest in a non-shortened season. Guerrero acknowledged disappointment with his year and his inability to do more to help Toronto reach its goal. That production contrasts with last year’s postseason, when he hit eight home runs as the Blue Jays advanced to Game 7 of the World Series before losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 11 innings. His extension ranks behind only the contracts of Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani in total value. It also carries a record $325 million signing bonus that protects that money against a possible work stoppage.
