Volpe moves across the infield
Anthony Volpe took another step in his changing role with the Yankees on Friday, making his major league debut at third base in the opening game of a doubleheader against the Orioles. Since returning from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre on Sept. 10, Volpe had started 11 games at second base. His latest minor league stint also included three starts at third, where he handled three chances without an error after rookie George Lombard Jr. Took over as New York’s shortstop. Volpe was the Yankees’ Opening Day shortstop from 2023-25, but his 2026 season began on the injured list following surgery for a torn labrum in his left shoulder. His path back has included time in Triple-A and a September return highlighted by a grand slam and a career-high five RBIs. He is batting.241 with two home runs and 26 RBIs in 68 games.
Stanton, Weathers remain under consideration
The Yankees also continued assessing potential postseason reinforcements. Giancarlo Stanton, working back from calf injuries in both legs, faced a minor league pitcher and Ryan Weathers during on-field batting practice. Stanton saw 20 pitches across four at-bats and struck out in each. Trent Grisham, sidelined with a strained right hamstring since Sept. 4, also participated. Weathers is recovering from a strained right forearm and could be considered for a postseason bullpen role. Stanton has not played since April 24. If included on the wild-card roster, he would likely be used as a pinch-hitting option. Manager Aaron Boone indicated that the decision would depend partly on the number of position players New York carries and Stanton’s physical and mental readiness. The Yankees could wait until Monday night to finalize their 26-man roster, which is due by 10 a.m. Tuesday.
