Walker Kessler came away from the opening day of Lakers training camp believing Los Angeles has the personnel to become a Western Conference contender. His optimism centers on a defense being rebuilt around rim protection, versatile wings and more pressure on the ball. The Lakers have produced above-average offensive efficiency during JJ Redick’s two seasons as coach, but their defense has remained below average. Following a summer marked by LeBron James’ departure and significant roster turnover, improving that balance is a central priority.
Kessler anchors a new approach
Acquired from the Utah Jazz this summer, Kessler brings a shot-blocking presence after averaging 2.4 blocks across his first four seasons. He expects the players defending in front of him to make that work easier by disrupting ball handlers and recovering when opponents get past them. Kessler highlighted Jarred Vanderbilt’s positional versatility and the pressure that Matisse Thybulle, Quentin Grimes, Collin Sexton and Ziaire Williams can provide. He also praised backup center Kevon Looney’s understanding of positioning. Luka Doncic, whose arrival in 2025 helped power the Lakers’ offense, also expressed confidence in Kessler’s ability to deter opponents around the basket.
Defensive competition sets the tone
Redick has made installing defensive principles an early camp priority. With both starting forward positions available, he challenged the wings to establish the team’s approach and was encouraged by their physicality and controlled disruption during the opening practice. There is substantial ground to recover after Los Angeles finished 20th defensively last season. The Lakers previously paired their 2020 championship with the NBA’s No. 3 defense, but that strength has faded. Kessler believes the revamped roster’s versatility and developing chemistry offer a route back toward contention in a conference featuring defensively strong opponents such as Oklahoma City and San Antonio.
