Herbert carries risk; alternatives offer appeal
Fantasy managers weighing Justin Herbert in Week 3 face a familiar dilemma: trust the talent or react to the Chargers' disappointing opening performances. Another chance is defensible, but Bryce Young deserves consideration as an alternative after producing two of his five best fantasy outings this season. Jared Goff offers a stronger recent scoring record. He has reached at least 20 fantasy points in five of his last six games, making him an increasingly appealing starter despite modest draft expectations. Patrick Mahomes also belongs firmly in starting-lineup plans. Concerns that Kansas City could build a lead and reduce its passing volume should not overshadow his production. Since the start of last season, he has averaged 21 fantasy points, second among quarterbacks. For managers needing an injury replacement, Geno Smith draws an attractive matchup against a Detroit defense that has been generous to opposing quarterbacks. That makes him a useful fallback rather than an automatic replacement for Herbert.
Montgomery has rebound potential
David Montgomery's workload fell to six rushing attempts in Week 2 after a Week 1 performance featuring three total touchdowns. A matchup with Indianapolis provides a promising opportunity to recover, given the Colts' struggles against several offensive positions. Jonathan Taylor faces a less inviting assignment. His strong early-season production meets a Houston defense allowing the third-fewest fantasy points to running backs. Kenneth Walker III, meanwhile, has delivered 23 fantasy points in consecutive weeks after reaching that level only once last season. Christian McCaffrey also reinforced his fantasy value with his 70th game of at least 20 points, matching LaDanian Tomlinson's mark for the most such performances since 2000.
