Oregon and USC face a revealing test
September results have raised questions without settling much about college football’s contenders. Week 4 brings a slate capable of changing that, starting with Oregon’s trip to the Coliseum to face USC. The Ducks entered the season with national championship expectations, but their performance against Oklahoma State gave reason for doubt. USC also has something to establish after a tighter-than-expected matchup with Rutgers. Oregon needs evidence of improvement; the Trojans need to show their early standing can withstand a demanding opponent.
Road opportunities for the Sooners and Aggies
Oklahoma visits Georgia with its offense under scrutiny following a 14-6 victory over New Mexico. That result followed a loss to Michigan, leaving the Sooners looking for a response that goes beyond simply getting back into the win column. Beating Georgia would substantially change the conversation. Texas A&M has a similar opportunity at LSU after losing to Kentucky. The Wildcats have shown encouraging signs under Will Stein, including a competitive half against Alabama, but the Aggies still have to demonstrate that their own ambitions remain realistic. LSU, meanwhile, is seeking a response after falling to Ole Miss.
Early setbacks need not decide the season
The 12-team playoff leaves room for recovery, and last season supplied a useful example. Alabama rebounded from an opening loss to Florida State to reach the playoff and win a postseason game. That does not make September problems irrelevant. It does mean Oregon, Oklahoma and Texas A&M have opportunities to reshape their outlooks. Their road assignments should also offer a clearer measure of USC, Georgia and LSU, whose expectations will face scrutiny of their own.
