Power 4 and CFP Structure
Following several ranked upsets in Week 6, including Georgia's road win over Alabama and UCLA's victory in Eugene, the postseason picture has shifted. Four unranked teams also toppled ranked opponents, with Oklahoma defeating then-No. 1 Texas in the Red River Rivalry. Under the 2026 format, Power 4 conference champions receive automatic bids along with the top-ranked Group of 6 team. The remaining seven spots in the 12-team playoff go to the next highest-ranked teams, with Notre Dame assured a place if it finishes in the top 12. The top four teams earn first-round byes, while seeds five through eight host the opening round on campus.
Projected First-Round Games
Projections for the Dec. 19 first-round games include No. 12 Boise State at No. 5 Texas or Indiana, No. 11 Texas Tech or Utah at No. 6 Ohio State or Alabama, No. 10 UCLA at No. 7 Alabama or Texas, and No. 9 BYU or Ole Miss at No. 8 Utah or BYU. Quarterfinal matchups at the Fiesta, Cotton, Rose and Peach bowls feature pairings such as No. 5 Texas versus No. 4 Indiana and No. 6 Ohio State versus No. 3 Miami.
Semifinals, Title Game and Early Bowls
Later rounds project teams like No. 3 Miami or Notre Dame advancing to the Orange Bowl and Sugar Bowl, with the national championship set for Jan. 25 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The bowl season opens Dec. 12 with the Cricket Celebration Bowl at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Other early contests include the Salute to Veterans Bowl, Frisco Football Classic and Boca Raton Bowl, with teams such as Miami (Ohio), Buffalo and Liberty appearing in multiple projections.
