Conditioning sets the foundation
Zion Williamson enters his eighth NBA season dissatisfied with his career so far, but New Orleans sees encouraging signs in his preparation for training camp. The Pelicans forward has yet to appear in the playoffs and has missed 278 career games amid injuries and fitness struggles, including the entire 2021-22 season. Basketball operations chief Joe Dumars praised Williamson’s conditioning and the initiative he showed during the offseason. Williamson is now listed at 277 pounds, compared with the 284 listed throughout his previous seven seasons.
Expanding beyond the paint
The next challenge extends beyond staying healthy. Dumars wants Williamson to take on greater leadership responsibility and become a more willing, reliable jump shooter against defenses that crowd the paint. Williamson said his summer work helped him build confidence in his preparation and reduce hesitation. Coach Mosley also sees opportunities to use Williamson’s passing and perimeter potential to create more chances for teammates and make the offense less predictable. Williamson credited Mosley’s regular offseason check-ins with strengthening the group and building connections beyond basketball.
Winning before contract talks
Williamson is eligible for an extension this season and remains under contract through 2027-28, but he and Dumars are prioritizing team progress over negotiations. New Orleans finished 26-56 last season and retained much of its core while adding scoring wing Bennedict Mathurin in free agency. Herb Jones, Trey Murphy III and Dejounte Murray have returned healthy after dealing with injuries last season. For Williamson, that continuity offers a foundation.
