Units

A unit is 1% of the bankroll you can afford to lose. Not 1% of the bankroll you wish you had. If you have $2,000 set aside, a unit is $20. Most bets should be 0.5–1 unit. 2 units is a strong opinion. 5 units is how accounts die.

Parlays

Price them as entertainment with a cap. If your Saturday parlay budget is two units a week, it cannot become eight because a tweet made you confident. Correlated parlays (same-game, same-side plus over) are how the book gets the hold back. Know when you are paying extra.

Stop rules

A losing day is not a reason to double. A winning month is not a reason to raise the unit until the bankroll has actually moved. If betting is no longer boring when you are doing it right, you have left the market and entered a different problem. Use 1-800-GAMBLER.
