Fine Issued After Game
The Big 12 Conference has imposed a 100000 dollar fine on UCF after fans directed derogatory chants at BYU during a football game last weekend. The penalty amount will support student education initiatives. The action marks the latest penalty tied to fan behavior toward BYU at conference events.
New Conduct Policy Details
Along with the fine, the league created a conference-wide policy on discriminatory conduct. A first confirmed incident triggers an automatic minimum 100000 dollar fine and a warning. A second incident during the same game can lead to an in-game penalty, such as a 15-yard unsportsmanlike call in football or a two-shot technical foul in basketball. A 500000 dollar fine may also apply in such cases. Fans removed for these actions face bans from athletic events for the rest of the school year.
Prior Incidents and Context
Previous penalties include a 50000 dollar fine to Oklahoma State in February for similar chants during a basketball game against BYU. Colorado received a 50000 dollar fine a year earlier for chants at a football contest. Colorado State issued an apology in September after fans targeted BYU and the associated church. Incidents also took place at Arizona and Cincinnati events without resulting fines.
