Rapid Rise to National Leader
Oregon State freshman Jesse Legree has emerged as college football's top receiver after seven games. He leads the nation with 1,040 receiving yards and 14 receiving touchdowns. Legree has recorded at least 100 receiving yards and a touchdown in each of the team's first seven contests, a mark matched by only one other FBS player in the past 30 years. His early performances included five catches for 136 yards and a touchdown in his debut, followed by eight receptions for 240 yards and two scores the next week.
Unlikely Path to Corvallis
Legree arrived at Oregon State with limited film at receiver after spending most of his high school career at defensive back. He received no other FBS offers despite playing at a national powerhouse. New coach JaMarcus Shephard identified him as the program's first target upon taking the job. Shephard noted Legree's skills in tracking the ball and changing direction, traits honed through basketball, and extended an offer that Legree accepted immediately on signing day.
Commitment Secured Midseason
Legree held a media event to announce he would return to Oregon State next season under a new contract. Other programs had shown interest after his breakout, yet he chose to stay with the coach who first gave him an opportunity. The Beavers have won five straight games since starting 0-2, all by three scores or more, and sit with 10 points in the AP poll as a Group of 6 contender.
