Roster Move Finalized
The Brewers placed Brandon Woodruff on their World Series roster ahead of Game 1 against the Tampa Bay Rays. Woodruff takes the spot of Chad Patrick, leaving the club with 13 pitchers and 13 position players. The 33-year-old right-hander has not appeared in a game since July 4.
Recovery Path
Woodruff dealt with an inflamed right shoulder that limited his fastball to 87 miles per hour in his final outing. Imaging allowed him to skip a planned second surgery in four years and begin a two-month throwing program instead. Reports showed his velocity returning to 92-93 miles per hour in a recent simulated game. Before the injury he posted a 2.98 ERA across nine starts.
Team Context and Opponent
Woodruff joined the organization in 2017 and remains its longest-tenured player. He is a two-time All-Star who finished fifth in 2021 NL Cy Young voting. The move comes after the Brewers recorded a franchise-record 103 regular-season wins and opened the postseason with a 7-1 mark. The Rays kept 12 pitchers and 14 hitters, swapping Brody Hopkins for Garrett Cleavinger.
