Form Concerns Mount
Steven Gerrard has suggested that Florian Wirtz may benefit from time out of the Liverpool side to regain confidence after a difficult opening to the campaign. The 23-year-old, signed from Bayer Leverkusen for £116 million ($156.27m), has yet to score this season despite appearing in every match and has recorded only his second assist in the 6-3 Champions League victory over LASK.
Personal Experience Cited
Gerrard noted that dips in form and confidence affected his own play in the past, with simple errors becoming more common. He explained that stepping away allowed him to rebuild consistency in training while creating a sense of competition that sharpened his focus once he returned. The former midfielder said a similar approach might help Wirtz rediscover his edge.
Recent Outings and Squad Limits
Wirtz started in the 3-0 Premier League loss to Manchester City but was replaced early after a red card left the team short. Gerrard added that injuries to Cody Gakpo and absences for Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak currently limit options for rotation, though he believes a spell on the bench would not harm the player once more options return. Last season Wirtz scored seven goals in 49 appearances.
